Once, when I was in library school in 2004 or so, I had the pleasure of going on a field trip to the National Library and Archives of Canada Music division. It was awesome! They have a huge room full of restoration equipment and lasers where this one lucky technician just gets to sit around all day remastering old stuff. They have a whole website of the stuff. However, they are mainly interested in super old canadiana, probably the only stuff within their mandate that doesn't have copyright, so the site was mostly "god save the queen" men's choirs or french folk songs.
That is wonderful if you can actually work at such a laboratory on a regular basis. Nice job, BTW. Would love to get one. But if not, the software mentioned by Verdyger Jr. is very good (and not cheap). It's more or less clear with God Save the Queen. It's sometimes much less clear what's going on with the copyright with regard to some Jewish music collections.
It should be but in reality - is it? There are relatives and in many countries there is this 50-year period within which only the successor(s) can take benefit of the copyrighted work.
