Well, I like the balalaika, too, but there is an often ironical attitude to this folk instrument among the classical musicians when it comes to music competitions, concerts at philharmonic halls, etc. Ironically, the balalaika has become a conservatory instrument, too.
The reason for such attitude might be found in the following two facts: 1. the balalaika was brought into the classical music world only in the 19th century; 2. the instrument was brought together with the folk musicians and was immediately (and rightfully) linked to the Russian traditional music, the latter having little to do with Bach, Mozart and Paganini whose works were arranged for the balalaika for the conservatory students.
With that said, of course I love folk balalaika playing and adore contemporary virtuoso balalaika players like Aleksei Arkhipovsky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdqAuyIbyBk) who is just a wonderful musician.

Не исключено, что да, что Незнайка был прав, когда утверждал, что хорошо играть на трубе - это громко играть на трубе.
В недавно приведённом мною в ЖЖ обзоре The New York Times концерта музыки Уильяма Шумана (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/arts/music/03schuman.html) в конце содержится комплимент моему знакомому, замечательному кларнетисту Исмаилу Лумановскому - за его соло на бас-кларнете. На что другой мой приятель - тоже кларнетист тоже в Джульярде - откомментировал: Size matters, play the bass and get reviews in The Times :)
