The first field recording I made was a couple of short Yiddish songs which my grandmother Feyga Levina, Z"L, sang to me. I was a teenager then, in 1992–1993, and I was spending a lot of time with my bobe, my granny, to comfort her after my grandfather Yankel had passed away. In fact, bobe Feyga never recovered from that loss, she passed away in 1999, at the age of 86. I pity greatly that I was so young then, in early 90s, I couldn't speak Yiddish. I only had a feeling that I must record something that my zeydes-bobes remembered. I still cannot find a full version of a song my grandfather had sung, "S'geven a mol a shnayder a guter..." in Major key. Later on, an extensive fieldwork with Nina Stepanskaya, Z"L, followed. We succeeded to record dozens of elderly Jewish people across Belarus and some areas of Ukraine and Lithuania. This collection which I've brought to the US, is pending publication and needs a substantial funding. I strongly believe this work will be done.
But here's that first recording, 2 songs, each of them is followed by a translation into Russian.
