KlezKanada 2010
Aug. 23rd, 2010 06:34 pmBack in NYC. KlezKanada 2010 was really good. Did some interviewing with Joseph (Yosl) Pollack and Edward Kagansky in the framework of National Yiddish Book Center's Discovery Project, together with Hankus Netsky. Reminded me of the late German Goldenshteyn, Z"L, but from a different perspective. Very very cool guys, indeed!

One of the biggest impressions and revelations of this summer: Alan Bern's The Other Europeans band. I remember Stas Rayko telling me about this project (he could not come to Canada this summer though). I hope this time intellect and taste in music can become business, too. I really wish it to this mind-blowing 14-piece international band.

At KK2010, I introduced a new Jewish instrument, vuvukleza. Carnival-tested, with a 2-octave range, it's good for your simkhes and for the Jewish people in general.

Of other things, I tried the Moldavian-Gypsy style, hands-on, on both tenor and clarinet, in a brass-brand led by Adam Stinga (+1). It's challenging, to sit in a band as a green student, without much initial understanding of how-to. But there's no growth without challenge, n'est-ce pas?
Spending a whole week without telephone or Internet access felt fantastic. A sure must-do at least once a year.

Date: 2010-08-24 01:58 pm (UTC)When they had presentations about the project last year or the year before at KK, I asked if they had some videos on their website or anything because I had a hard time finding any recordings of them. A.Bern assured me that there were videos on their site but I really couldn't find any. The best I could find were some blurry concert videos on youtube or a couple of short and admittedly interesting clips by people like Mark Rubin and Bob Cohen.
My curiosity has yet to be satisfied :)
