klezmer: (Litvak)
Yesterday I finally happily finished translating the play "Di Ganovim" ("The Thieves") by Fishl Bimko, for the Folksbiene. I had never had to use so many Russian curses before. Neither had I known I would ever need so many of them to translate a play from Yiddish.
Meanwhile, I saw again Dr Chava Lapin of the YIVO Institute. In the course of our brief conversation, I mentioned the academic Jewish studies in the former Soviet Union. Chava burst out with exclamation: I am pretty much convinced that the level of Jewish studies THERE is higher than HERE. Of course, this is given that both countries are at the cutting edge of that academic field.
And, speaking of Jewish studies in Russia, a couple days ago I got a list invitation to a Winter School in Jewish Studies, which made me feel pretty nostalgic. All those years of my past life, studying and teaching at such seminars was great fun. Well, life's going on...
